8. (20171104) High school teachers (teachers of students aged 14-18) spend most of the class time lecturing while the students listen and take notes. Other high school teachers spend most of the class time on discussion and projects that students are highly involved in and exchange their ideas. Which of these two approaches do you think is more effective for students' learning and why?
According to the educators, the purpose of high school education not only includes helping students acquire knowledge and training them to learn skills, but also consists of making students better and more independent learners so that they can continue to educate themselves after they graduate. From my perspective, the most effective way of high school teaching is lecturing by the professor.
I have to admit that sometimes discussions and projects are not only significantly helpful but also indispensable in students' learning. In detail, discussion provides the students with a platform for them to share ideas, help each other brainstorm, and form the ability to think critically. With the supportive attitude the teacher provides and light atmosphere created by class discussions, students can be easily inspired from time to time and analyze the text with a deeper understanding. Doing projects, especially group work, is also excellent for students to use what they learned in the classroom to solve real-life problems, and it is also a great way of cultivating students' interest and ability in academic research.
As a Chinese student, I know that although projects and class discussion are helpful to the students, the Chinese College Entrance Test is the most crucial factor determining which college could a student get into. In this circumstance, lecturing is more appropriate and effective for boosting their grades rather than discussions or projects. By lecturing traditionally, the teachers are able to explain as many theories as possible within the limited amount of time in school, which offers the students an opportunity to learn as much as possible. Many high school-level courses, such as geography and biology, are designed to have huge workloads and a great number of terms for students to memorize. In this type of classes, teachers are able to cover more pages and explain fully with details through lecturing. For example, in the form of discussion, a forty-minute class will likely be able to cover a few points only. In contrast, in the form of lecture, such a class might be able to cover the content of a whole chapter.
Second of all, high school students need teachers' instruction for their incapability in fully understanding some abstract theories and concepts. Although the students might be able to discuss in a group, the discussion could also be time-consuming and not productive at all since they could fail in figuring out the answer. Thus, they'd better depend on teachers' explanation. For example, I was struggled in solving differential equations in high school calculus class. Some questions were so challenging for me that I have to seek for Mr. Irvine's help. Fulfilling his responsibility of being a math teacher, Mr. Irvine taught me again how to solve differential equations step by step until I was able to do it independently. I can't even imagine what could happen if I didn't have Mr. Irvine's aid.
Drawing the conclusion, I believe sometimes discussions and projects may play an auxiliary role in students' learning, but the dominant approach of high school teaching should be lecturing.
