《五哥放羊》是陕北民歌丝弦小调代表性曲目之一。1953年全国首届民间音乐舞蹈汇演后，时任上海音乐学院院长的著名音乐家贺绿汀率先将民间艺人请进高校任教。歌唱家鞠秀芳拜陕北民间艺人丁喜才为师学习民歌小曲，把《五哥放羊》引进声乐教学演唱后此曲广为传播。1957年鞠秀芳在莫斯科“第六届世界青年与学生和平友谊联欢节”荣获金质奖章。新编《五哥放羊》汲取了鞠秀芳、彭丽媛、冯健雪演唱版本之长。

Wu Ge Herding the Sheep is a representative song of “stringed tunes”, a subgenre of northern Shaanxi folk songs, usually accompanied by string instruments. In the 1950s, when folk musicians were first taken into the faculty of Shanghai Conservatory of Music by its president He Luting, this song was introduced into the curriculum of vocal music education, which helped to spread it all over the country. The version in this anthology treats the original song with inventive stylistic means.
